The Varsity Boys Baseball season came to an end last nights at the hands of Orchard Lake St Marys, 8-6. The Pioneers fell behind in the top of the 1st inning 4-0, but tied up the game in the 2nd inning. Curt Townsend had a single in the first inning, advanced to second on a ground out by Tyler Moser, then scored on a Joey Johnston single. That made the score 4-1 after 1. In the second inning Tevin Stockel started the Pioneers off with a single, followed by a Tyler Johnson single. Lawson Smith laid down the perfect sac bunt to move Stockel and Johnson to 2nd and 3rd with one out. Vinny Groppi grounded out to score Stockel from 3rd making the score 4-2. Townsend hit a hard ground ball that was bobbled by St Marys and was safe at first scoring Johnson from 3rd to make it 4-3. Tyler Moser walked, then Joey Johnston walked to load the bases. Hunter Soper hit a single to score Townsend from 3rd base to tie up the game. OLSM scored 2 runs in the top of the third on an error by Tevin Stockel on the wet turf, but the Pioneers fought back and scored 1 in the bottom of the 3rd on a key triple by Vinny Groppi to make it 6-5. The scoring stopped until the 6th inning when OLSM added 2 runs to make it 8-5. Once again the Pioneers fought back to add one in the bottom of the 6th on a Hunter Soper RBI single to cut the deficit back to 2. OLSM held on to the lead in the 7th and won 8-6.
Offensively we were led by a 3 hit performance by Hunter Soper. Tyler Johnson added 2 hits of his own. Hunter Soper threw 6 strong innings, striking out 5 guys and allowing 6 hits. The Pioneers finished the season with a 24-13 record.
